A theme is a design scheme of colors, fonts, and background that you apply to your slides. Using a theme gives your presentation a harmonious appearance with minimal effort.

Text and graphics automatically take on the size, colors, and placement defined by the theme, which means less manual work as you create individual slides. After you create a theme, it’s located on the Design tab in the Themes gallery.

To try out a theme, rest your mouse pointer over a thumbnail in the Themes gallery and notice how the look of your slide changes. Understand the difference between PowerPoint templates and themes. Remove or change the current theme. Format the background color of slides.

Download pre-designed themes from templates. Design your slides. Backgrounds and themes. Create your own theme in PowerPoint. On the Design tab, in the Variants group, select the down arrow that opens the gallery of color variants: Select Colors , and then click Customize Colors. The Create New Theme Colors dialog box opens. In the Create New Theme Colors dialog box, under Theme colors , do one of the following: Select the button next to the name of the theme color element for example, Accent 1 or Hyperlink that you want to change, and then choose a color under Theme Colors.

Repeat for all of the theme color elements that you want to change. Select the set of effects that you want to use. For more info about customizing a theme see Create your own theme in PowerPoint. To apply a themed document stored in a different location, click Browse for Themes , and then locate and select the theme you want.

To apply a second master and set of layouts, scroll to the end of the layouts in the Slide Master View. Click after the last layout, click Theme , and then choose a theme.

A new set of layouts will appear in the style you picked. You now have two themes to choose from in this presentation, but the new theme you’ve chosen hasn’t been applied to any slides yet.

Tip: If your goal is to display very little or no color on the slide a plain look , apply the White theme. A theme is a collection of specific fonts, colors, and slide layout.

When any of these elements is formatted manually, that formatting overrides the theme. For example, if your presentation uses the Courier font and you manually format some of the text as Tahoma, reapplying or changing the theme will not affect the text that is formatted with the Tahoma font. Restore a font to the theme font. Restore theme colors to objects. Restore theme layouts. Each theme has two sets of fonts, one for headings and another for body text.
