This is a new departure for Nero partially following that of others like Microsoft that were I think the first to produce a version with Office. Here I am looking at the Platinum version which is Nero in all but name. To be clear you will still be able to download any bug fixes but not any totally new parts.
This year Nero Start has a new front end that has four columns of four items in four bright easy to read colours. However some things have moved sections so they are all the same length.
Once everything was installed only twelve of the sixteen items were highlighted and the other four, Tune It Up, Wave Editor, Audials Music and Sound Trax still need to be downloaded. By the time every App was downloaded just over 10GB of hard disc space was taken and I had not installed some extra templates etc. Even though I had the latest code on a memory stick it still — like so many — insists on checking online for updates and the install is not that quick on my Intel i5 Windows 10 machine it was around 45 minutes till it was completed.
Another new feature this year is that it can only be used on a single PC at any one time so while you can — I am told — install it on a PC and a notebook it checks to see that it is not being used elsewhere. I assume this check can only take place while you are connected to the Internet.
Any item added will not show on the Nero Start menu until it has been closed and reopened. So what is totally new from the version, the start menu now looks completely different and a lot neater. While the modules are fairly well organized and neatly arranged, and the Wi-Fi syncing app is useful, there remains something uninspiring and challenging about Nero.
The software’s multitude of modules offer all the basics in terms of functionality — and there’s some clever use of mobile apps added to the mix — but the execution of these many features has flaws.
