Many of us have used ERwin as a data modeling tool for many years. But Erwin r8 represents one of the most radical upgrades of a software package I have experienced in thirty years in the data processing business. It may have been the marketing pressures from competing data modeling products that impelled Computer Associates to invest so much in this upgraded version.

In any case, ERwin r8 is a vastly different product, with a great deal more functionality as compared to earlier versions. In the past, most folks probably learned earlier versions of ERwin intuitively and without formal training. This book absolutely fills in the gap for experienced users of previous versions of ERwin.

But it is also an excellent text for users of other products or even for those entirely new to the discipline of data modeling. DBA’s will likewise be well edified by the many practical examples even of physical data modeling, forward, and reverse engineering contained within the text.

Of the very many innovative aspects of this newly enriched product, I was perhaps most thrilled with the treatment of domains.
