Group Policy is one place where it’s easy to back yourself into a corner. There are literally thousands of policy settings you can configure, and if you accidentally configure the wrong setting in your Default Domain Policy, you might end up with hundreds of phone calls to your support desk asking for help. That’s because any change you make to your Default Domain Policy automatically affects every user on your Windows network.

Messing around with your Default Domain Controllers Policy can be even more dangerous. Domain controllers are the heart of your network as they contain the Active Directory database and control all access to you network resources. That means making a mistake when editing your Default Domain Controllers Policy can have drastic results including users who suddenly can no longer log onto their machines or who are unable to access intranet websites, shared folder or network printers.

Talk about impacting your business processes! What can you do to prevent such scenarios from happening? Then when you need to apply a particular policy setting to every user or computer in your domain, configure this setting in your Company Domain Policy. Similarly, when you need to configure a setting on all your domain controllers, edit your Company Domain Controllers Policy. This way, if you mess things up in either of these two policies, you can always disable them and fall back to your two default policies while you troubleshoot the problem.

In that case, you’ll need to tread a little more carefully. Repeat these steps with your Default Domain Controllers Policy. Now for the tough part: returning your two default policies to their pristine state. The usual recommendation I hear about in this kind of situation is to use Dcgpofix. The trouble with this approach however is that this tool doesn’t do all it says it can do. For instance, it doesn’t restore the security settings in these policies to their original state see KB Plus the state it returns these two policies to can differ from your original state if you upgraded your domain controllers from a previous version of Windows instead of doing a fresh install of Windows Server Using this tool can also have undesirable side effects if your schema has since been updated, for instance if you have upgraded your domain controllers to Windows Server R2.

For instance, if you try running the built-in version of Dcgpofix. All domain controllers are server. Software Restriction Policies to the rescue! Or, you can get it in plain English in my book. Oh, and it doesn’t matter if your DCs are or Are Group Policy Objects cumulative? I thought that if a GP was assigned to an OU then its features would overwrite any features set by a GP assigned to a level above. However, if you have a GPO which says to do one specific thing at, say, the Domain level, and another GPO which ways to do a specific thing, at, say the OU level, the one “closer” to the user or computer will apply.

So, here’s a simple example: At the domain level, imagine that you restrict the control panel, but at the OU level, you make it available again. You’re in luck! Well, not really since you blew up a critical GPO. Microsoft has just released RecreateDefPol. Do not use this tool on Windows Server ; use Dcgpofix. I love using the Group Policy Software Deployment functionality. However, recently I tried to decommission a file server we were using, and well, chaos ensued. Any recommendations or “best practices” for using Group Policy Software Deployment?

Use DFS in conjunction with software deployment, and you’ll be in clover. That is, you can bank on the DFS share being there, even if you change the underlying file server name.
