What is video editing for consumers? Is it focused on quick trims, or should it offer more sophisticated timelines and layered effects? Adobe does all of the above with its latest release of Premiere Elements 9, along with the companion Photoshop Elements 9. But for Adobe, video and photo editing is not for novice consumers. But more and more, the focus of the Elements product line is on the separate Elements Organizer tool that is included with both products, to help you catalog and tag and organize your photos and videos.

The Elements Organizer is a handy stand-alone tool in its own right for getting started with editing — you can use it directly to apply simple edits, create slideshows, templated movies and DVDs, and then share online and to mobile devices. The new Elements 9 further emphasizes this focus, as all three components are now equally available on Macintosh as well as on Windows.

Adobe clearly believes that consumers need the headroom to step up to more sophisticated projects. Premiere Elements for video editing and Photoshop Elements for photo editing are not tools for casual consumers. Yes, they have accessible tab-based interfaces e. It also adds additional sophisticated effects, including an animated outlined cartoon look and audio cleaning for background noise, volume and clarity.

The Elements Organizer also adds other new sharing options including Online Albums with animated templates based on Flash and uploading directly to Facebook. Similarly, Photoshop Elements 9 adds high-end technology including the Spot Healing Brush to repair photos, Layer Masks, PhotoMerge Style Match to adjust photos according to the characteristics of another, and enhanced Photomerge Panorama that fills in the edges of panoramas using the amazing content-aware fill from Photoshop CS5.

Like other media browsers, the Elements Organizer is designed to help you browse and view your photos and videos, zooming in and out on thumbnails, and searching by name. The key technology behind the scenes in Elements is the Auto-Analyzer. As you import media files — photos and videos — the Auto-Analyzer processes them in order to set over 25 Smart Tags with information about them — for quality e.

Similarly, InstantMovie can take advantage of the Smart Tags to automatically pick the best sections of footage in order to generate a polished movie based on your selected template.

For example, for an archive of 5, to 10, photos, or more, plus videos, the Elements Organizer will need to spend lots of time chewing through them to generate thumbnails especially for the videos , and then an hour or more running the Auto-Analyzer to process them all. Elements does run its processing in the background, and you can set the Auto-Analyzer to only run while your system is idle, and to run on startup to continue processing even while the Elements application is not running.

On my test system the background Auto-Analyzer seemed to get stuck on certain PSD and JPG files, but I was able to work around this by stopping and restarting the process, and running it manually on specific folders. In particular, Premiere Elements provides tremendous assistance in automatically analyzing your footage to find good and bad clips, and then takes advantage of this information to provide automated editing, clean-up, and mixing.

However, this does require significant processing, especially when you first import a large catalog, so you need to be patient and allow it work in the background. Premiere Elements then provides the best of both — seriously sophisticated editing capabilities, with automated assists to do much of the heavy lifting. In particular, you can use Elements to do the heavy work of the first-pass analysis and editing of your footage, and then enjoy the fun part of tweaking and customizing the results.

Most recently, Adobe Premiere Elements has been improved with enhanced Mobile Video Syncing so that you can transfer space-hogging videos directly from your mobile device, into Elements for editing. Alternatively, you can sync Elements videos with your mobile, so you can access them from anywhere.

Editing has generally been improved with more helpful hints on retouching videos with some new flashy titles and effects. There are some cool narrative themes which make turning weddings and holidays into stories much slicker too.

It’s also where you can enter contests with your videos and see what other people are making with Elements. The interface in Adobe Premiere Elements is very similar to that in Adobe Premiere and follows a standard video editing suite layout.

The application is divided into two main parts: the Organizer and the Project editor. Both work seamlessly with each other and share the same sleek, elegant dark interface. The Adobe Premiere Elements Organizer lets you browse your media photos, audio and video , rate them and add captions to them. The Editor, on the other side, is where the creative part comes in.

The editor in Adobe Premiere Elements features the classic video editing working space, with a special area for imported media, a built-in preview window and a timeline at the bottom.

Though it may seem confusing and difficult to use at first sight, a bit of effort and patience will help you master the program without much fuss. If not, there are plenty of useful Adobe tutorial videos to get you going.

I had been very impressed and had learned a lot from that book and thought this new publication would be equally impressive. This hasn’t disappointed and although I’ve not used the Photoshop Elements software very much so far and therefore not read much about it in this book, I’ve delved into the Premiere Elements section frequently and acquired some useful knowledge about the software.

Steve must have written this book after reviewing an earlier issue of Premiere Elements 9, as some previous features have been removed by Adobe in the retail version and quite a few bugs have crept in. I have been waiting for Amazon UK to stock this book, as I live in England, but after checking their website for several weeks and an email sent to them drew a blank, I ordered it through Amazon. I was advised that I would probably have to wait until early January for delivery so was surprised and delighted when it arrived in mid December.

I had ordered it online 22 November This is a great book for understanding the relationship between Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements. It can help anyone doing video editing to add a level of craft bring photos into it to their business. Both these programs have a learning curve that needs instruction and this book provides it. It takes you step by step in all phases of these programs from simple to complex.

I do wish it had more complete explainations of the video and audio effects that are available in Premiere Elements. You have to learn these by experimenting with the program. I do recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn the ins and out of PE and PE 9. It’s hard to rate a book like this without an experience of the other books on this subject.

It opened my eyes to what the software potential was but what I would have liked was exercises with maybe a DVD supplied or download of pictures and video clips for use with the exercises so that I learn’t how to correctly use the tools.

And this update to Adobe’s consumer video-editing software is even less jingly than the image-editing package when it comes to new bells and whistles. But this does represent Adobe’s first bit port of the package–Windows only, unfortunately–which is an essential step for future development of the product.

Adobe has beefed up the Organizer a bit to improve its video support, since it’s now serving Premiere Elements as well as Photoshop Elements. It allows for hierarchical tagging, as well as Smart Tags, which can automatically classify your media as high, medium, or low quality, as well as tag what it thinks is in focus, low contrast, blurred, and so on.

Running the Auto Analyzer to get the video tagged can take a while, though. And I’m still unhappy with the way Adobe handles AVCHD import; it tries and fails to process all the ancillary files that are part of the directory structure, and doesn’t give you the option to copy the entire file structure wholesale so that it can be played back or just burned as if it’s a disc. And if you’re planning on burning AVCHD discs, keep in mind that the software doesn’t yet support version 2.

Via the Organizer you can now directly upload unedited videos to YouTube as well. The application itself uses the same task-oriented architecture as Photoshop Elements, with Project, Edit, Disc Menus, and Share modes that are fairly straightforward.

It uses a traditional video-editing interface, with both timeline and scene editing views. There’s a bit of a learning curve to understanding even the basics for simple effects and transitions, but it’s no worse–and no better–than most other video-editing software when it comes to ease of use.

There are only a couple of significant new features in version Adobe has added a new Three-Way Color Corrector, which splits corrections for highlights, midtones, and shadows.

While useful, I wish it had a way to do coarse changes on all three channels at once, then unlock them to fine-tune them individually. It also adds Auto Tone and Vibrance–both handy for automatic corrections–which should be familiar to Photoshop users. Adobe also adds a pan and zoom, which lets you move around and dive into still images, and it can automatically pan around to identified faces. It’s easy to use, but can be annoying: if you try to use a photo that’s the wrong dimensions for the movie–and many photos are –it just tells you the image is too big.

There really needs to be a dialog that pops up and allows you to resize or crop the photo. As you’d expect, there are new themes, you can now upload movies to Facebook, and SmartSound music clips are now available on the Mac. On the Mac, Premiere Elements is more powerful than iMovie with a more traditional interface, but I think it’s a bit slower and more intimidating as well. Users of previous versions running bit Windows should probably upgrade for the better memory management.
