Then ran regedit as the new user name which has admin privs and with multiple iterations found hopefully all instances of the old user name in a slew of registry entries.

I decided I could endure the loss of internet passwords, but evidently I have screwed something up in my registry hacking. I did create a system restore point before starting this process.

Simply reboot into Safe Mode and you should be able to rename the folder. It worked for me. As long as you are running an Antivirus Suite it will probably block any attempt to rename the profile folder. Get the recent offline installer package of your Antivirus software and, if supported, save your settings. Reboot in save mode and log in to the alternative user account.
