I found Kelby’s book too narrow for me as it only answered some of my questions and did not allow me to develop my own approach. I am not a photographer but a jeweller taking photos for my website so although I do not want to know Lightroom by the back-of-my-hand I do want to explore it and find what it has to offer me, which may be things I had not thought about before.

I find Victoria Bampton writes really well, I am no photography geek and yet am able to understand what she says without having to try too hard. I find the book suits my approach of dipping in to the areas I am interested in and do not feel I need to read it cover to cover to understand enough for my uses. As a novice I found the chapter on how to edit photos really useful as I had been struggling with workflow and how and what I needed to correct.

A lot of the book will not be useful to me, how to make slideshows, books do special effects etc. But I feel it is worth the price just for the portions I want as I am able to understand it!!! I was looking to buy Scott Kelby’s book I’ve bought his books in the past and came across Lightroomforums. This book is so instructive and written in a logical easy to follow and understand style.

I admit I did have a couple of initial questions concerning basic organisation and emailed Victoria direct. Her rationale and answers on Lightroom management quickly put me at ease, giving me the right LR mindset.

Where else can one receive such prompt and constructive response? Though my Lightroom journey is really only just starting I can nevertheless recommend this book wholeheartedly. I have been using Adobe elements for a few years and a few months ago I purchased Adobe lightroom 6, and it suits my need perfectly. I purchased Scott Kelbys book on lightroom 6, having previously purchased a book he published on elements.

Kelbys books are good but I have to say this book in my view is exceptional in every respect and is THE lightroom book. All features of lightroom are fully and explained in detail, all the questions I have are answered, if I have a further question I can email.

I have a few books on LR, Scott Kellby etc, all good, but this one as some one said in another review is the one I wished I had bought first. It is big, pages, but one of those books that you flow with and don’t have to read a passage over and over to get the meaning. It just so user friendly, but contains all the things that you want and what a delight when you find answers to problems you never could figure out. I have used LR for 2 years or more and got by, but am so pleased I got this.

No point in listing all it covers, thats done already, just buy it. What a great book and written in a way for every type of user. I am a beginner and in the short time I have had the book I have found many things I would have not have known by playing with the software. Each category is explained in an easy way to follow but not leaving out the detail.

Once you have the book, it is a must to send your order details explained in the book to Victoria and you will then get added to the members area, which entitles you to more downloads and upgraded to a premier membership. I cannot fault it, add that to the quick service from Amazon and you are up and running for many hours of photo editing.

It is well laid out, clear and concise and written in uncomplicated language that people like myself can understand. Gone are the side comments and leaping around chapters to find relevant detail. There is of course a fast track reference keyed into the various chapters to take you onwards should you feel the need for speed. Personally I find it so absorbing and such a relief to find a down to earth and practical reference that explains things in an orderly way. If you were struggling with LR this is the book for you.

When I did get an issue I couldn’t work out I emailed her on the dedicated address and lo and behold within 5 minutes she replied with the answer – highly impressed!!

She must go down the shops at some point so I cannot give any assurances she will always reply that quickly but this kind of help with such a complex and involved piece of software is priceless and without equal.

The book is written clearly and is well illustrated, most importantly you are supplied with newsletter updates which keep you up to date with the many changes, improvements and fixes Adobe come up with. If you are a Lightroom CC user then in my opinion it doesn’t matter how proficient you are or think you are this book is invaluable and worth every penny.

Brampton’s book can easily stand on it’s own for teaching LR6, but for me using both a text and videos is best for learning this type of material. Sometimes I read first, followed by a video on the subject, and sometimes I reversed the order.

I began using both sources, but quickly found that Bampton’s book was much easier from which to learn. Most of Northrup’s videos were made with earlier versions of LR and NOT at the same time as the edition of his book; accordingly, I often had difficulty finding the video segments that corresponded to a chapter’s material that I was reading. Though I will keep Northrup’s book around to review material on specific topics, my go-to source for learning more about LR6 will continue to be Bampton’s book.

Had I not had to jump through so many hoops see 2nd paragraph above to find the instructions for moving my Aperture library into LR6, which for me was nerve-wracking just thinking about it, I would have rated this a 5-star book. The information in this book may be excellent, but the Kindle version is very difficult to navigate I use the Kindle for iPad app. Although the Amazon “Look Inside” feature clearly shows a table of contents in the paperback version, it seems there’s no table of contents in the Kindle edition.

This means you can’t navigate directly to the subject you want. I suppose that’s no problem if you choose to read the book cover-to-cover, but it’s a serious flaw in a reference book. It turns out there is an index, but it took me a while to stumble on it, since there’s no table of contents to link me to it.

Once I found the index, I tried to bookmark it, but I can’t navigate back to my bookmark in this Kindle book as I can in others. The author mentions in her introduction that the book is also available in PDF format, so I thought that might be a better option if it includes a table of contents.

With that in mind, I went to her web site to see if she offers a discount to buyers of one format who decide they also want another format. As I said, the information may be great but, frankly, I’ll never know because it’s too difficult to find in the Kindle book. And, of course, the difference in purchase options is downright annoying. My advice is to buy the paperback edition or, if you prefer an e-book format, purchase it directly from the author’s web site.

Once it arrived, I went to the author’s web site and registered the book to become a “premium member” on her site. Within a day she e-mailed to confirm my membership.

I downloaded and installed the ePub edition to my iPad and it works fine, complete with a table of contents. Now that I’ve had some time with the book in both paperback and ePub forms, I must agree with other reviewers that the content is excellent.

She covers each topic thoroughly and clearly, with plenty of illustrations. I’ve already uncovered information I searched for in vain in other Lightroom books and videos. I wouldn’t use this book to learn Lightroom I recommend Laura Shoe’s video series for that , but it’s the most in-depth reference I’ve come across. Because the content is so good and the ePub version works fine on my iPad, I’m upgrading my rating from 3 to 4 stars. I still can’t give it 5 stars, but only because of the problems and inconvenience I experienced with the Kindle edition.

I needed the latter, because I already had 19, photos spanning 16 years, and I wanted to know what choices to make during the importation process to minimize the down-stream effort to organize them. As soon as I received the program, I immediately imported all of my photos and began attaching keywords wrong! However, after reading the chapter on importing and understanding the consequences of my initial choices copy vs.

All of the video examples on the Lightroom web site demonstrate techniques on small collections of newly-imported photos. They don’t address the implications of importing large collections that may contain duplicates scattered across many file folders. I highly recommend this book if you are just starting with Lightroom or if you want to minimize the work of organizing a large collection of photos. I also found this book useable in the Kindle form, which was not the case with the other book.
